Bernie Wood Trophy 14 July 2018

The Bernie Wood Trophy is a celebration of the ongoing 50 year tenure as an Altrincham GC member of Bernard Wood . As such it was given a higher tariff of prize money with a huge pot on offer attracting a quality field . Today conditions were hot and sunny with the course having benefitted from the welcome recent rainfall making greens slightly more receptive ! The absence of a decent wind left the course more vulnerable of late to good scoring and it was no surprise to see lower handicappers challenging for honours.

Ageless multi-major winner Danny Miller (22/20/42)has reaped the rewards of his relentless practise regime by dominating the field to take the prestigious inaugural Bernie Wood Trophy . After a relatively steady start Miller 3-pointed 5 of the last 6 holes to amass 22 points at the turn to lead the field ! He maintained his form to keep ahead of the pack but crucially 4-pointed the tricky 17th to help him to a 42 point total ( a superb gross 73 )  6 shots under his handicap and a two point victory .The handicapper has duly reduced his handicap by 1.0 to 6.8 !

Jim Fallon is now fast approaching his 60th birthday but this silver surfer continues to challenge for the top honours although he was steady early on in his round posting a 16 point front 9 to leave him well back at the turn ...the June Monthly Medal winners’ scoring on the back 9 was a different matter with a magnificent ‘best in show’ 24  point haul with the highlight a rare eagle 2 on 11th for a 4-pointer and a second place finish  ! The handicapper saw fit to cut him by 0.9 to 13.0 !

Steve ‘Taff’ Wilkinson (19/21/40)  continued his strong showing this season and the Arthur Cooper winner was a model of consistency here with his front 9 19 point haul including a couple of 3 pointers but the former Alty GC Captain took closer order on the back 9 with his 21 points including a birdie 2 on the tricky 13th. then a crucial 4 point birdie on the last to finish in third place . The handicapper recognised his efforts with an 0.6 reduction to 9.1 !
