2019 Remembrance Trophy 18th May

Remembrance Trophy 18th. May 2019

Mark Terris (19/20/39) is a quiet brooding figure on the course and usually plays with his louder brasher father DR ( the Doctor ) who captured the 2018 TBarlow Trophy . Now the son has matched the father as Mark took the Remembrance Trophy with a performance suggesting that he went on all out attack ... today that approach ensured that he scored a magnificent 9 3 point scores .

Standing on the fearsome 12th tee after ( curiously) blobbing the benign 11th hole he responded magnificently to score 3 points in 5 of the next 6 holes to take the lead and the Broadhurst Park-based tricenarian could afford to double bogey the last gaining the winning point outlasting  his rivals for his first board competition victory . He was the only player in the field to take the eye of the handicapper who docked him 0.3 to a new mark of 14.3

Second placed Robert W. Kay (18/20/38) is the much travelled businessman who has chosen Alty GC to spend his autumn golfing years and who crucially extends his golfing in Senior comps across the country which undoubtedly assists his game . He had the energy and verve to captain both the club and the William Wroe Vets last season and is a very popular figure on the course . Kay is known for his quick but accurate swing mostly favouring a low trajectory . Today this diminutive septuagenarian has excelled and his quintet of 3 pointers ( highlighted by a birdie on 11 together with an awesome birdie on 13 ) took him into the lead with 30 points with 5 holes to go and in serious contention ... sadly he played the next four gaining only 5 points with a devastating blob on 17 which effectively scuppered his chances of taking the trophy back and a 3 pointer on the last ensured he finished in second place .

Third placed Alastair Holloway (18/20/38) had started with a bang with 7 points in his initial two holes with a birdie on 1st. - he went in to amass 16 points in his first 6 holes before a poor run of 2 points 7-9 left him on the fringes of the leaders ... the tall mop-haired golfing powerhouse regrouped and took a further 14 points in his next 5 holes to stand on 32 points and in pole position . Inexplicably he again had a poor finish to the 9 and a 6 point haul from his final four holes left him a point short .

Club champion Glen Rothwells’ (17/20/37) low handicap makes it very difficult to actively be competitive in the forum of Stableford but the Timperley-based quinquagenarian produced a ‘best in show’ excellent gross round of 73 which translated into a 37 point haul . 2 birdies on 7 and 18 were the highlights and he managed 3 3 pointers despite his low 3 handicap . A fine effort for our champion to finish in fourth place .

Congrats to Altys’ Chase hero and ex-squaddie Brian Cawley (17/20/37) and early rising Ged Grogan (19/18/37) for also finishing just two points away with special mentions going to the other golfers reaching that mark ...

Andy Miehe (18/19/37) is the softly spoken premier ball-striker whose swing is the envy of many a club member . Today he has started steadily to reach 18 points at the turn but 4 consecutive 3 pointers took him into serious contention and he led the field as he stood on the 17th tee with an impressive 36 points ... tragically he blobbed the 17th and his double bogey at the last meant a 37 point total and 6th. place .

Andy Slater (18/19/37) won this competition last year and the defending champion has made a robust attempt to keep the trophy .The tall sexagenarian had a rollercoaster 18 points at the turn which included  a trio of 3 pointers and a blob on 4 which put him three points behind the leader . Three consecutive pars gained him 10 points and put him into contention . Sadly his next five holes gleaned only 6 points and though he rallied with a 3 point par at the last it meant a 7th. placed finish .

Michael Bange (21/16/37 - 9th) , Gary Shaughnessy (21/15/36 - 16th) and John Thompson (21/14/35 - 22nd) led the field at the turn but neither could maintain their challenge whilst Paul MacDonald (14/22/36) and Greg Harding (15/21/36) both had slow starts but were the best players over the back 9.

Overall the course stood up well to the membership on a rare chance to contend for a board Stableford competition .
