This trophy celebrates those members who have given their previous time to assist our wonderful greenkeeping staff and was originally the brainchild of our Secretary now Captain-elect Matt Goodall ... in recent years the number of members taking part has dwindled with a low of 4 members in 2013 ... today only 10 members took part ... this observer hopes that our Committee can find a way to make the event more attractive as it is clearly apparent that more members should help to maintain the current high standards of the course .
Paul ‘Macca’ MacDonald has added to his board competition haul by taking the important Divot Party Trophy ...
At the turn it was a tight affair with playing partners MacDonald and Miller joint leaders with Goodall , Dickens and Rossiter just a shot back .
By the 14th MacDonald had gained 2 further shots to handicap on 10 and 13 to stand at net 3 under but Miller had fallen two behind after dropping a shot to handicap on 10 but had immediately fought back with gains on 12 and 13 to get him again just one shot behind .
Matt Goodall had dropped further behind after a tipsy turvy start to his back 9 whilst Roy Dickens had been similarly up and down (with gains on 10 and 13 divided by a dropped shot on 12 ) .
Wily veteran John Rossiter was playing well and had gained shots on 10 and 13 to be just one shot back and in serious contention .
From the 14th hole only MacDonald held his nerve gaining a further shot on 15 and playing the other holes in regulation to finish 82/15/67 .
Danny Miller (76/6/70) had defended his title stoically but the loss of two shots to handicap on 14 effectively ended his challenge and although he picked up a shot on 15 he finished 3 shots behind his great friend and compatriot but in the top 2 for the third consecutive time in this event !
Secretary Goodall (80/8/72) could only finish 5 behind in third after maintaining his mixed round with dropped shots on 14 and 16 negated by gains on 15 and 17 .
Roy Dickens (92/20/72) played to handicap 14-16 thus stood on the 17th tee 1 under his handicap and needing a great finish to get close to the leader . Sadly dropped shots to handicap on both closing holes meant a 4th placed finish .
John Rossiter had an uncharacteristically poor stretch of holes dropping 4 shots 12-14 then NR’ing after two poor tee shots on 15 .
Overall the small but perfectly formed field gave us a competition that was closely fought until Paul MacDonald again demonstrated his ability to raise his game for the pursuit of trophies to open his account for the season !
