J Greatbanks Trophy 19th July 2020

The Greatbanks trophy is our Board Competition which is our annual quest to find the clubs best pair in the genre of ‘bogey’ golf , a straight match between the pair and the course . It is named after J. Greatbanks who won the Bailey in 1965 and 1971 .

NB SADLY YOUR SCRIBE DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ANY DATA OF TODAYS EVENT WHICH IS WHY THE REPORT IS ACCORDINGLY BRIEF . INTELLIGENT GOLF DOES NOT YET HAVE THE CAPACITY TO RECORD PAIRS BOGEY COMPETITION RESULTS ... SHOUT OUT TO OUR HANDICAP COMMITTEE TEAM FOR PROCESSING THE RESULTS MANUALLY .

The Royle family have been a major player in our club for decades ... together they have amassed over 40 victories in that time but collectively drew a blank in 2019 , their first barren year since 2009 .

David and Neil Royle (+8) have produced a magnificent score today and closer inspection of current form suggests that it was eminently predictable . David had won the Social Bogey ( for those who had not qualified for the Cooper ) outscoring the Cooper winner and with Neil in fifth that day the duo clearly love this genre of golf . Today second-generation family members David (3rd Board Comp) and Neil (9th Board Comp) have prevailed .

Andrew Window and Ian Cheetham (+7) have been partners in golf since joining independently in 2016 . The two chums are undeniably quirky on many levels but both have an definite talent in their chosen sport but cursed with inconsistency which has restricted personal successes . That said , as a pair they broke their duck when taking the Gyves & Gardner last year and they came very close to winning again but their score of +7 was one short . An encouraging result for this pair which augurs well for the remainder of the season .

Matt Astbury and John Thompson (+6) are two of our most improved members with the duo having cut their combined  handicaps by a massive 12 strokes since debuting just over a year ago . The pair had played well in the last pairs event , finishing second in the Wilsons thus it was no surprise to see them contend today . Your scribe was able to glean a little information on their round today and it appears that the pair had been +7 with 5 holes to play but their momentum stalled and their feeling was that they had been the architects of their own downfall as they finished two wins away in third place .

Special mentions ...

Carl Grout and John Wilks (+8) have both shown great form this post-lockdown season , with Grout producing several challenging performances whilst John Wilks stunned the membership by claiming his first Board Comp victory in taking the Tommy Barlow just 2 weeks ago . Today the pair combined to produce a superb +8 score but inexplicably they ( and the other pair in their foursome Brian Cawley and Keith Walton Snr ) had marked their own cards which left our Handicap Committee with no other option but to disqualify them .

Richard Paulson (+2) A great effort by Richard , who played alone as his long-term chums Andy Mills and David Doughty paired up and left him to play as an individual .His score was good enough to claim 12th place .

Defending Champion Watch ...

Johnathan Dickens is currently not taking part in competitions this season his victorious partner Nate Butterworth paired up with Ian Wood today and performed admirably in taking fifth place just 2 wins from repeating his 2019 heroics .
