Presidents Trophy Knockout 2019

Presidents Trophy Knockout 2019

The Presidents Trophy ( formally known as the Presidents Prize ) has guidelines described in the Constitution as follows ...

‘Commencing with a Medal Qualifying Round, the 15 leading net returns (irrespective of handicap divisions) are drawn to play off in match play.  The winner receives a prize presented by the President and gets automatic entry into the following years competition, and the beaten finalist receives a prize presented by the Club.’

The aim for all players in the Presidents Qualifier is quite simple ... finish in the top 15 to get into the knockout stage .

Qualifiers for 2019 were as follows after the Qualifier held on 7th. April  ...

Ken Flatters (-1/-6/-7)  87/23/64

Mark Royle       (3/2/5)  88/12/76

NormCrowther(2/3/5) 84/8 /76

Danny Miller  qualified as defending champion .

Ken Flatters is one of our senior players and he is always to be found playing in the earliest tee times . He played one of the best rounds of his Alty GC career with a stunning net 64 to win the qualifier. It was particularly sad that he was not able to take part in the knockout stages ... 4th placed Derek Cullen also was not able to take his place leaving 13 qualifiers and the 2018 defending champion Danny Miller to fight for this prestigious prize .

The draw was made ...

Miller v M Royle

Mason v Crowther

Gayle v Butterworth

Walton Sr v S Royle

Astbury v Harding

Ralston v Prince

I Wood and R Kay were given byes

Miller,Crowther,Gayle,Walton Sr, Harding and Prince all win their matches and joined Wood and Kay in the quarter finals .

The quarter final draw saw the following matchups ...

Miller v Crowther

Gayle v Walton Sr

Harding v Prince

Wood v Kay

Miller, Gayle and Prince won their matches and the Kay/Wood match up never took place which sadly meant both were disqualified from the competition which gave Prince a bye to the final .

Gayle and Miller played out their semi-final with Danny Miller coming out on top to face Prince in the final for the opportunity to win his third consecutive Presidents which would be unprecedented in Alty GC history .

No actual details are available as to any of the matches as scorecards were not available  ... suffice to say that in a battle between two of our most talented golfers Phil  Prince defeated Danny Miller to win the Presidents for the second time and in all the 11th Board Competition of his Alty career .

A fantastic achievement for Phil and a phenomenal effort from Danny to come sooooo close to making Alty history in what has been a very frustrating year for him .

Your reporter would very much like to provide a more in-depth report of our Knockout Competitions but as the scorecards aren’t on the system his hands are tied as without having the actual scores in the respective matches he cannot translate them into a more interesting read .
