The Roberts Cup 2019


The Competition Rules state ‘Commencing with a Medal Qualifying Round, the 16 leading net returns (irrespective of handicap divisions) are drawn to play off in match play.

The winner receives the cup and a prize presented by the Club.  The beaten finalist receives a prize presented by the Club.’ 

In the qualifier itself Robert Williams had a superb start getting to 5 under his handicap at the turn and although he dropped 3 strokes on his back 9 his 82/13/69 was still good enough to win the Qualifier with his round on a difficult day for scoring .

Alty new boy James Imeson was having his first competitive round at the Club and he responded well , his net 70 including 8 net birdies and a horror quint bogey 9 on 6th. preventing him from taking first place . 

Multi-Board Comp winner John Hogan was third after a net 73 that included one of the only sub-par back 9s . 

Your reporter had a day to forget , posting the third best score of the day (90/18/72) only to forget to sign his card thus miss out on what would’ve been his first ever single KO qualification . 

 

The draw took place and the following matchups resulted ... 

Goodall v Drury

Savage v Manson

GBoardman v Dixon

Hogan v SRoyle 

Imeson v Rossiter

Shaughnessy v Christian 

Ralston v Caffrey

Williams v BWood 

 

7 of the 8 matches took place with the exception being the Savage/Manson match which did not happen resulting in both players being disqualified. 

The other matches resulted in wins for Boardman , Hogan , Imeson , Shaughnessy , Caffrey and Williams .

 

The quarter final draw pitted together the following ...

Boardman v Hogan

Imeson v Shaughnessy 

Caffrey v Williams 

Matt Goodall got a bye in this round ...

 

Experience told with 2016 vintage Alty ‘newbie’ Williams and 2019 member Imeson losing their matches to Caffrey and Shaughnessy respectively .In the other match of Alty legends Gordon Boardman overcame John Hogan . 

 

That left 8-time Board Comp winner Gary Shaughnessy playing 7-time Mark Caffrey whilst 2016 Roberts winner and 12-time BC winner Gordon Boardman faced defending champion (and 7-time BC winner ) Matt Goodall in a battle of the multi-major winners .

 

Goodall and Caffrey triumphed to fight for the trophy with Caffrey coming out on top to deny Goodall in his quest to defend the title  . Caffrey claimed his 8th Board Competition but his first knockout victory in this prestigious competition . The winning margin of 6&5 suggested that it was a very one-sided affair ...
