Tommy Povey 2021

Glen Rothwell 439 (75,66,73,74,74,77) has strolled to a dominant victory to take the prestigious Tommy Povey trophy for the ninth time in his career . Rothwell had put himself in pole position throughout the season and on 12th September with 11 events to go he held a commanding 16 stroke lead over Club Championship runner-up Jason Denton . Of the 17 rounds he had posted , Rothwell got himself to a total of 441 with his best effort coming with his phenomenal 66 when victorious in the Captains Bowl with 79 his highest qualifying score . Denton , whose work and family commitments restricted him to just 9 rounds , was not playing enough to match his rival whilst third-placed Danny Miller was 2 strokes further back , still boosted by his breakthrough Club Championship victory and eager to attempt to win the Tommy Povey .Other low handicap golfers David Royle, Ralston , Butterworth and Snape had good campaigns but were too far away to actually challenge .

In those 11 remaining events Rothwell played in only two , with a 77 reducing his score by two strokes to give the field a score to challenge … second placed Jason Denton played in 4 further events , NR’ing then winning 3 medal competitions which improved his score by 4 strokes but still left him 14 strokes adrift . Denton triumphed in 7 of the 13 competitions he took part in so can be very pleased with his 2021 campaign .
Third-placed Danny Miller played in 6 more events and managed to knock 6 strokes off his score to snatch second place from Denton courtesy of a superb 75 in the Senior Trophy .

Nathan Butterworth played in 9 more medals without being able to improve his score which meant a 6th placed finish , a huge contrast to David Royle , the former Club Champion putting up a magnificent showing in the Trafford Leisure , the only other competition he played , posting the best gross performance of 73 which enabled him to cut his ‘super 6’ score to 460 , which elevated him to a 4th place finish .

Mark Snape , in 6th position , played in 4 more events and cut his score by 8 strokes but dropped back to 7th whereas his great friend Keith Ralston moved up to 5th place cutting his score by a spectacular 22 strokes in his last 9 events .
Much respect to Messrs O’Connell , Grogan and John Cullen who had the kudos of finishing in the top 10 this season .

A truly memorable performance by Glen Rothwell who put aside his disappointment in a relatively poor showing in the Club Championship ( by his high standards ) to reinforce that he remains by far the most consistent low scorer in the club to bring him his 23rd Board Competition in just a decade at the club and his 7th consecutive victory in this prestigious event .
